My third class on Pedagogy :D

  How's ya day? So usually I'm having pedagogy on Tuesday but unfortunately our lecturer has to postponed it to Wednesday. Well is sokay, we understand it Dr. πŸ˜ƒ




  On Wednesday I was arrive on 8:45 because our lecturer said that she'll be late, feel relief that I can buy some bread for awhile. Hue hue hue πŸ˜† So on 9:05 I've reach to the classroom and I just saw few of people and no lecturer yet. So I decided to find a place to sit and charge my phone. (Didn't charge for last night because forget) T_T Now let's back to topic :) Sorry for mumbling just now πŸ˜ƒ

  Before this our lecturer have posted an article about "NAVIGATING THE BUMPY ROAD TO STUDENT-­CENTERED INSTRUCTION", at first when I read about this article is feel shock for awhile because it was talking about what student-centered is, how does it works, the 8 types that student will be experiencing during student-centered and 11 kinds of problem that teacher faced. All of this while we've been talking about how good are the student-centered is and never talk or discuss about what the others student experience during this student-centered and how teacher face it. At first I'm not so understand about it but after the discussion on the class I've finally understand about it.

  During the class our lecturer have talk about 'Scratch Jr', she mentioned that we need to understand on how to use it because student will learn more on technology. So we all looking on our phone to seem whether can download it or not but unfortunately it stated we couldn't download it because our device isn't compatible with this version. So I was trying other way by download it on my tablet. Finally, I made it! I can download it! Our lecturer said that we need to view on other's people on how they do it then we follow their steps. I try to press all of the button over then finally I can make that cat move around. Hahahaha... Okay2, enough πŸ˜† Back to topic, running too far with the topic.

  Before our class end, our lecturer ask us to do reflection about teacher concerns in student-centered. She asked us to list out 4 of the issues and each issue use 2 methods to solve it. So it's 8... ._. Well let's discuss about it πŸ˜ƒ Here is some of the method that I suggest to come over the issues :)

Didn't teach them well then will lose control on the class
Issues 1 : Didn't teach them well then will lose control on the class
Method: (a) Call and response
                        Call and response is a catchy sayings that use to catch student attention, this method is appropriate and won't harm any student's feelings. For example, teacher say "Heyyyyyyy" and student will reply "We're awesome!" In here teacher won't lose any control of it.

               (b) Always have good plan in a classroom
                      Before class start, teacher must always have a plan on how to take control on the class. Always have a plan on how to maintain a class's control, but don't just have one plan. Prepare for backup plan because it's better to run out of time in class rather run out of control in a class.

               (c) Jokes or have fun for awhile
                      During class, if teacher have teach for 15 minutes then it's time for some jokes or fun. Tell the student some joke and fun but remember, jokes and fun without hurting any student's feeling. By this way, this will bring them back to pay attention on you.

Hard time in work team
Issues 2 : Student are having hard time to work in team. 
Method: (a) Emphasize the important of teamwork
                        Teacher should tell the student why does teamwork is important or why this activities need to be work on group. Teacher must always remind them that if we practice using team work start from school, in the future we will be easier to face people in different views, skill and capability.

               (b) Provide some class time for meeting
                       It might be the one of the reason why student don't agree on work in team. Student are always having hard time to find a suitable time to discuss in a group due to others group member are giving excuses. In here, teacher can give some time during class to let them having discussion but only if teacher are finish teaching in the class.

Let's go to issues 3!

Issues 3 : Student are not working well in their assignments and keep complaining about the team member are not participating
Method : (a) Ask student to share what they've been through during assignment
                         In a group, if there is a student who do not cooperate during the assignment, the team member can jot down on a piece of paper and write about who doesn't give a help during assignment until the end of the assignment or ask them to tell personaly straightly to teacher. It's just like a peer evaluation but it's doing more anonymously.

                (b) Giving the group tasks that can encourage in involvement and fair division
                       Teacher should give some group task that can let the student to understand how important is the participating in a group task. In group, student be able to know about each responsibility for their team mates and realize that their individual success is depends on their group member's success.

Issues 4 : Student don't like student-centered approach , they be more like to use conventional way.
Method : (a) Believe in student's capacity 
                        Even though teacher using student centered approach in a classroom, but yet they still didn't give a chance to let student to take charge in certain things. As a teacher, it is a must to let student to take charge in activities even they have not enough skills yet. But this is a process learning to student, let them learn with their own experience. Teacher must reduce direct instruction and increase student-led learning activities. This can help the student to slowly accept the student-centered approach.

                 (b) Assessing their needs and wants
                        Teacher must be knowing about what are the student needs and wants in a classroom, how they want to learn. You don't have to ask in the classroom, they won't answer it because they are not dare enough to talk about it. Try to ask them to write on a piece of paper and pass it over teacher. It probably will work.

Teacher are providing what are their needs and wants.

                (c) Developing healthy relationship with students
                       Since it is student-centered approach, teacher must try to communicate with the student. By this, teacher will be able to know their background, their needs and weakness that can be improve. Teacher can having a communication by encouraging or mentoring the student, getting know to their life story might also can help to having a health relationship.

  4. Good Job Mimi.. Your suggestions are great.. Teachers who are friendly can really help the students to be relax in class.. As u said, Jokes or have fun for awhile During the class, if teacher have teach for 15 minutes then it's time for some jokes or fun. will bring them back to pay attention on you.
